A torn or sagging pool cage screen is one of those repairs Florida homeowners put off — until the bugs, leaves and debris make the pool area unusable. The good news is that most screen repairs are quick and affordable, especially if you know what to expect before you call. Here are four things worth understanding first.
1. Not all screen material is the same
The mesh in your enclosure isn't one-size-fits-all. Standard 18x14 fiberglass is the most common and keeps out typical Florida insects. If no-see-ums are a problem near lakes or the coast, a tighter 20x20 “no-see-um” mesh is worth the small upcharge. Solar or privacy screen cuts heat and glare, and pet-resistant or aluminum mesh stands up to dogs and heavy wear. Choosing the right material up front saves you a repeat repair later.
2. You may not need a full rescreen
If only a few panels blew out in a storm, a partial panel replacement is usually all you need — and it costs a fraction of a full rescreen. A good contractor will match your existing screen type and frame color so the repair blends in. A full rescreen makes sense when the screen is uniformly sun-brittle, discolored, or more than five to seven years old.
3. The frame condition matters as much as the screen
Screen is only as good as the aluminum frame holding it. Bent members, corroded fasteners, or loose cables should be addressed before new screen goes in, or the fresh mesh won't sit tight for long. Always ask whether the estimate includes a frame inspection.
4. Timing and storm season affect cost and scheduling
Demand spikes right after hurricanes and tropical storms, when everyone needs a rescreen at once. Booking during the calmer months usually means faster scheduling and a more relaxed crew. Either way, insist on a free, on-site estimate with upfront pricing — no reputable Central Florida screen company should quote a full cage sight-unseen.
