In Central Florida, every pool cage eventually meets a tropical storm. Whether yours survives with a few loose panels or comes apart entirely often comes down to how it was built and maintained. Here's what actually matters.

Wind ratings aren't just paperwork

Modern enclosures are engineered to a wind-load rating tied to your county's building code. Older cages may pre-date current standards. If your enclosure is decades old or has been patched repeatedly, it's worth having the structure assessed before storm season rather than after.

Hardware fails before the frame does

The weak point in most enclosures is the hardware — screws, tek fasteners and cables. In Florida's humidity, non-stainless fasteners rust and lose their grip. Upgrading to stainless or coated hardware during a rescreen dramatically improves how the cage holds up in high wind.

Screen choice plays a role

Screen is designed to tear away in extreme wind to relieve pressure on the frame — that's by design, and a blown-out panel is far cheaper than a collapsed cage. That said, properly tensioned, good-quality mesh with sound spline holds up better in ordinary storms.

Pre-storm maintenance checklist

• Tighten or replace any loose or rusted cables and fasteners.
• Re-tension sagging panels so wind can't get under them.
• Clear debris off the roof screen so water doesn't pool and add weight.
• Have bent or corroded aluminum members repaired before the season.
