Screen enclosures are engineered structures with a wind rating, and one of the most useful things to understand is that the screen is designed to fail before the frame does. Mesh blowing out of a panel in high wind is not the structure failing — it is the structure working, releasing wind load that would otherwise be transferred into the aluminum. Torn screen after a storm is very often the best possible outcome.
How the design actually works
Wind on a fully intact enclosure has nowhere to go, so it pushes against every panel and loads the whole frame. Once a panel releases, wind passes through and the load on the structure drops dramatically.
That is why after a serious storm you often see cages with several panels gone and a completely intact frame. The alternative — screen that held and a frame that came down — is a far more expensive morning.
It also means the correct response to blown-out panels is a rescreen, not a rebuild, and you should be sceptical of anyone who arrives after a storm saying otherwise.
What actually determines how yours performs
The condition of the fasteners more than anything else. Corroded screws are the failure point in almost every enclosure that comes apart, and the corrosion is invisible from the ground.
Whether the cage is properly anchored to the deck and to the house. That junction takes the highest load in the structure and is the one most often found undersized on enclosures retrofitted to older houses.
Cable condition, on cages that use them. Cables add tension and lateral strength, and a corroded or snapped cable removes a meaningful part of the structure's resistance — see our guide on enclosure cables.
Whether anything overhangs it. A branch that clears the roof in still air does not clear it in a storm.
What to do before the season
Trim overhanging limbs. This is the single highest-value thing on the list and it is the one most often skipped.
Have the frame and fasteners looked at if the enclosure is more than about fifteen years old, or more than about ten on the coast. Corroded fixings are cheap to replace ahead of time and expensive to discover afterwards.
Photograph the whole enclosure while it is intact, from several angles, and keep the photographs somewhere you can find them. If you later make a claim, dated before-photographs are genuinely useful.
Fix small tears now. A two-inch split under tension becomes a lost panel in the first real wind.
What not to bother with
There is no cover, coating or spray that meaningfully improves a screen enclosure's wind performance. Removing screen panels before a storm is sometimes suggested; it is a great deal of work, it is only practical on a small cage, and the screen is already designed to release.
Time is better spent on the frame, the fasteners and the trees.

Is torn screen after a storm a sign of a badly built cage?
Usually the opposite. Screen is designed to release under high wind load so the frame does not take it. Blown-out panels with an intact frame is the design working as intended.
Should I remove my screen panels before a hurricane?
Generally not worth it. It is a great deal of work, it is only practical on small enclosures, and the screen is already engineered to give way. Trimming overhanging branches and checking fasteners does far more good.
How do I know if my enclosure is properly anchored?
You largely cannot from the ground, which is the problem. Movement at the junction where the cage meets the house, or rust staining at anchor points, is worth having looked at before storm season rather than after.
