Standard 18x14 fiberglass is the right choice for most Central Florida pool cages. The three upgrades — no-see-um, pet-resistant and solar — each solve a specific problem, and each costs you something in airflow, view or money. Choosing well means knowing which problem you actually have.
Standard 18x14 fiberglass
The default, and it is the default for good reasons: it is inexpensive, it has the best combination of airflow and visibility of anything on this list, and it stops mosquitoes and ordinary flying insects perfectly well. The numbers refer to the weave — 18 strands per inch one way, 14 the other.
Its weaknesses are that it will not stop no-see-ums, it tears if a dog leans on it, and it offers no meaningful shade. If none of those is your problem, you do not need anything else.
No-see-um mesh
A tighter weave, typically 20x20, designed to stop biting midges that walk straight through standard screen. If you live near open water — a lake, a river, marshland — and you find yourself being bitten inside your own enclosure in spring and autumn, this is your answer and nothing else will do.
The trade-off is airflow. A tighter weave moves less air, and on a still Florida evening you will notice. It also collects dust slightly more readily. Most people who need it consider that a fair exchange for being able to use the space at all.
Pet-resistant mesh
Much heavier, usually vinyl-coated polyester, several times stronger than standard fiberglass. It exists because dogs and cats push against lower panels, and standard mesh gives way.
It is noticeably less transparent and reduces airflow, so almost nobody wants it across an entire cage. The sensible pattern is pet-resistant on the lower panels only, where contact happens, and standard mesh above. That gets you the durability where it matters without turning the whole enclosure murky.
It is also worth considering in short-term rental properties with no pets at all, purely because guest-occupied cages take heavier handling than owner-occupied ones.
Solar screen
A denser weave that blocks a substantial share of solar heat and glare. On a west-facing lanai that becomes unusable at five in the afternoon, it genuinely transforms the space, and it cuts fading on outdoor furniture.
It is the most visually obvious of the four — it darkens the view noticeably and reduces airflow. Many homeowners use it only on the panels that face the afternoon sun and keep standard mesh elsewhere, which is usually the right compromise.
Mixing materials on one enclosure
There is no technical reason to use a single mesh throughout, and good reasons not to. Pet-resistant low, standard high. Solar on the west face, standard on the others. No-see-um on the side facing the water.
This costs a little more in labour because it complicates the job slightly, and it is the option least often offered because it is more work to quote. It is frequently the best answer.
Questions people ask about this
Will no-see-um screen stop airflow noticeably?
Yes, somewhat — a tighter weave necessarily moves less air, and you will feel the difference on a still evening. If insects are keeping you out of the enclosure entirely, that is usually an easy trade to make.
How long does pet-resistant screen last compared to standard?
Considerably longer against physical contact, which is what it is for. It is still subject to the same ultraviolet degradation as anything else, so it does not last forever in the sun — it simply stops being torn open by a dog.
Can I put solar screen on only part of my enclosure?
Yes, and on a cage with one hot face it is usually the smartest choice. There is no requirement to use one material throughout.
