How Long Does Pool Screen Last in Florida?

Sun does the damage. Everything else is a modifier.

Pool screen in Central Florida is worn out by ultraviolet light, not by use. Mesh degrades from above, which is why roof panels almost always fail before walls, and why a shaded cage outlasts an identical one on an open lot. Anyone quoting you a single number for “how long screen lasts” is ignoring the two factors that matter most: exposure and what is sitting on top of it.

Why roof panels go first

Roof panels take direct overhead sun for the entire day, while walls are angled away from it and often partly shaded by the house or by trees. The result is predictable and near-universal: by the time wall panels are showing their age, roof panels have usually been failing for a while.

This is also why partial rescreens focused on the roof are a legitimate option rather than a fudge, provided the walls genuinely have life left in them.

Debris is the accelerator nobody accounts for

Leaves, twigs, acorns and pine needles sitting on roof panels hold moisture against mesh that is already UV-brittle. That combination does far more damage than either factor alone, and it is concentrated exactly where the screen is weakest.

Clearing roof panels two or three times a year costs nothing and is the single most effective thing a homeowner can do to extend screen life. Under heavy canopy it makes a very substantial difference.

It also matters where you live. A cage under mature oaks has a completely different debris load from one on a cleared lot in a newer subdivision, and their screens will not last the same length of time even if installed on the same day.

Coastal exposure changes the question

Near the coast the screen is often not the limiting factor at all. Salt air corrodes fasteners and attacks aluminum at cut edges and contact points, so the frame can reach the end of its life before the mesh does.

On a coastal enclosure the useful question is not “how long will the screen last” but “is the frame still sound enough to tension new screen onto”. Those are genuinely different questions with different answers.

How to judge where yours is

Colour first: uniform chalkiness across the whole cage means age. Then the thumb test — press firmly in several places, including a roof panel if you can reach one safely. Mesh that tears rather than flexes has reached the end regardless of how it looks.

Then look at the spline. Hard, shiny, cracking spline is the same age as the screen and will not survive being reused.

What actually extends it

Clear the roof panels regularly. Trim branches that overhang the cage. Rinse salt off coastal enclosures. Fix small tears promptly, because a tear under tension spreads.

None of that stops ultraviolet degradation — nothing does — but the difference between a maintained cage and a neglected one on the same street is real and worth having.
