If screen keeps coming loose in the same spot, the frame is moving and no amount of rescreening will fix it. Screen problems are visible and frame problems are not, so homeowners consistently pay to solve the wrong one. Here is how to tell the difference before you spend money on mesh that will not stay tight.
Six signs the frame is the problem
Spline creeping out in the same place repeatedly. The classic sign of frame flex. Common on elevated, wind-exposed lots — the Clermont ridge is the clearest local example — where sustained wind works a member back and forth rather than hitting it once.
A visible bow in an upright. Sight along each vertical member from below. They should be straight. A bow means the member has been loaded beyond what it should take, often by a ladder leaned against it or by a limb strike.
Sag in the roof line. Look along the top edge against the sky. A dip indicates the structure is no longer carrying its own load properly.
Rust staining running down from joints. Corroding fasteners inside the joint. The staining is the visible end of a problem that started years earlier.
Movement where the cage meets the house. That junction is the highest-load point on the structure and the one most often found undersized on enclosures retrofitted to older houses.
Doors that have stopped closing properly. A door that used to latch and now does not is telling you the opening has changed shape, which means the frame has moved.
Why tensioned screen makes it worse
This is the part that catches people out. Old loose mesh puts almost no load into a frame. Properly tensioned new mesh puts a great deal more, and pulls in every direction at once.
So rescreening a frame that is already out of square does two unwelcome things: the new screen loosens quickly because the structure moves under it, and the added tension can make an existing distortion worse. You spend money and end up further behind.
What can be repaired and what cannot
Repairable in most cases: corroded fasteners, a single bowed member, a loose attachment at the house, damaged spline channel on one section.
Harder: widespread corrosion through the aluminum itself, particularly at cut edges on coastal enclosures, and a structure that has gone out of square across multiple bays. At that point the honest conversation is about replacement rather than repair, and a contractor who raises it is doing you a favour.
The order of operations
Frame first, screen second. Always. Straighten, refasten and re-anchor whatever needs it, then rescreen onto a structure that will hold the tension.
Doing it in that order costs less than doing it in the other order, because the alternative involves taking new screen back off. This is why we look at frame geometry at the estimate rather than counting torn panels.
