Why Pool Cage Screws Fail First

The most common serious problem we find is one homeowners never see.

On the great majority of screen enclosures, the screws fail long before the aluminum does. Frame members are thick, coated and hold up well. The fasteners holding them together are small, often steel, and sit in exactly the places where water collects. This is the most common serious problem we find that the homeowner had no idea existed.

What is actually happening

Where a steel fastener meets aluminum in the presence of moisture, the two metals corrode faster together than either would alone. Add Florida humidity, rain driven into every joint, and near the coast a constant supply of salt, and the fastener is the weak link by design.

The corrosion is usually invisible from the ground. It happens inside the joint, and by the time you can see staining or a screw head that has gone rusty and rounded, it has been progressing for years.

Why it surfaces during a rescreen

This is the part that surprises people. Old, loose mesh puts very little load into a frame. Properly tensioned new mesh puts a great deal more. A rescreen therefore tests every fastener in the structure, sometimes for the first time in twenty years.

That is why a competent estimate looks at fasteners before quoting screen, and why a rescreen onto corroded fixings can fail within two years. It is also the single most common thing we find already done badly on coastal enclosures — new mesh, old screws, and a job that came apart.

Coastal enclosures are a different category

Salt air compresses the timeline substantially. A twenty-year-old enclosure in Port Orange, Melbourne, Cocoa or Titusville has typically aged like a thirty-year-old one inland, and the difference is almost entirely in the fixings and at cut edges where the aluminum coating was broken during assembly.

If you are on the coast and someone quotes you a rescreen without looking at the frame, get another quote.

What good practice looks like

Replacing corroded fasteners with appropriate stainless fixings during the rescreen, while everything is accessible. Paying attention to the junction where the cage attaches to the house, which is both the highest-load point and the one most often found undersized on retrofitted enclosures.

Doing this at rescreen time is inexpensive. Doing it afterwards means taking screen back off.

What you can check yourself

Look along the base rail and at the corner joints for rust staining running down the aluminum. Check screw heads at accessible joints for rust or rounding. Push gently against an upright — movement at a joint that should be solid is worth reporting.

None of this requires getting on a ladder, and any of it is worth mentioning when you call for an estimate.

Can corroded screws be replaced without rebuilding the cage?

Usually yes, and rescreen time is the natural moment to do it because everything is accessible. It is a straightforward job then and a much more disruptive one later.

How do I know if my fasteners are the problem?

Rust staining running down from joints, rounded or rusted screw heads, and any movement at a joint that should be rigid. From the ground, staining is the most visible sign.

Are stainless fasteners worth the extra cost near the coast?

On a coastal enclosure it is the part of the job least worth economising on. Fasteners are what fail first there, and replacing them again means removing screen you have just paid for.
